Fane (1825-1885) raised a regiment of irregular cavalry ay Kanpur (Cawnpore) in 1860 for the 2nd China War (1857-1860) and commanded it during the campaign, being present at the capture of Beijing (Peking). The following year it became the 19th Regiment of Bengal Cavalry, being designated as lancers in 1864. Fane was the regiment's Commandant between 1860 and 1879, and his name was added to its title in 1901. In 1922 the 19th Lancers (Fane's Horse) amalgamated with the 18th King George's Own Lancers to form the 18th/19th Cavalry. In 1923, that regiment was redesignated as the 19th King George's Own Lancers.
